Why I started building Wyttle
I spent the first six years of my career developing my skills in Business Development and Account Management within the tech industry. Alongside this, I made a conscious effort to branch out into other areas of the business where I could add value, to grow professionally and progress.
Throughout this time, two things were consistently important to me. First, staying connected with peers in similar roles who were equally ambitious: checking in, sharing experiences, and learning from different perspectives. Second, surrounding myself with mentors who were a few steps ahead of where I was, and where I aspired to be, so I could learn from their experience and guidance.
Over time, I realised I wasn’t alone. Many people my age felt the same way, but it was becoming increasingly difficult to build and maintain these connections. Working from home reduced natural, informal interactions, while social media felt overwhelmingly busy, self-promotional, or in some cases, inauthentic. There were platforms that addressed parts of this problem in isolation, but there didn’t seem to be a single, credible solution that brought it all together in a way young professionals are used to today.
What felt missing was an easy-to-use, flexible platform - something similar in feel to a dating app where you could jump on and off when it suited you, connect with like-minded peers, access mentors for guidance when needed, without high costs or heavy time commitments. Just a high-trust, credible place to grow.
That’s when I started working on the concept that became Wyttle.
As for the name I wanted something that represented momentum and propulsion, but also organic development and refinement. Frank Whittle, the inventor of the jet engine, symbolised forward motion and progress. At the same time, whittling is the process of carving away excess material to reveal something stronger and more refined. The meanings felt perfectly aligned. The challenge was finding an available domain... and so, Wyttle (with a Y) was born.
